PNL Role
Since 2019, PNL has performed as the PRP group’s Project Coordinator at this large, complex State Superfund Site. The PRP group includes 60 companies.

A Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permitted hazardous waste treatment, storage, and
disposal facility (TSDF) operated on the 44-acre Site from 1966 to 2003.

The PRP Group, with oversight from the State’s Regulator, DHEC, is commencing pre-design and design
activities to implement the final remedies for the cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater as
defined in the ROD.

Cleanup technologies identified in the ROD and outlined in the Statement of Work associated with the
Settlement Agreement include:

  • In situ thermal-enhanced treatment in select source areas to treat soil and groundwater for volatile organic compounds (VOCs);
  • Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) in portions of the property where liquid phase hydrocarbon is present;
  • Hydraulic containment of groundwater;
  • Monitored natural attenuation (MNA) in areas determined necessary after active treatment has been completed;
  • Groundwater and surface water monitoring;
  • Institutional Controls.
